Creativity and self-expression define and shape our collective experience of Burning Seed. At the heart of it is the ART supported by the ARTery crew who work year round to support and facilitate art at Burning Seed and beyond. The ARTery wants you to get involved and create and to help you we’ve got a series of Info Sessions, a range of grants and we’re always available to answer your questions via email.

INFO SESSIONS

Join ARTery crew Stephanie and Naomi to find out about our new E.O.I, (Expression of Interest) starter grants, small art grants (under $1,000), large art grants ($1-5,000), Kids Camp and Riverina residents art grants, how to apply and what information you’ll need to include in your application. We’ll also cover general art registration. Previous grant recipients will also be attending and if we have time we’ll host a round table discussion about building art and creating community.

The ARTery has a range of funding available to you including a new Expression of Interest grant that will give artists the opportunity to apply for up to $500 to explore an idea they want to turn into a full-fledged project. We also have large grants for projects needing up to $5,000 and smaller grants for projects $1,000 and under. You can find out more details on our Art Registration and Grants Page

2017 Burning Seed Art Blast Off!

Are you ready to go deeper? Have you strapped on your rocket booster pack? We hope so because now that we all know we’re heading to Deeper Space in 2017 it’s time to get the creative processes happening and the ARTery is here to help you make your vision blast off!

ART GRANT INFO NIGHTS & SAFETY FIST!

Earlier this year we hosted two ART GRANT INFO NIGHTS, one in Melbourne and another in Sydney. We loved engaging with the community in person (it was so nice to get off of facebook and into meatspace!) and talk about our processes, your processes, and get some fantastic feedback and suggestions from the artists and those who want to take the plunge. If you didn’t make it you can CHECK OUT THE POWERPOINT (filled with internet cats and great tips!) and email the ARTery if you have any questions. One of the big discussions that happened in both sessions was around safety and doing dangerous things and how we can expand what we do and how we do it. From this the SAFETY FI(r)ST Committee was started and we’ll be diving deep into our insurance policy, risk registers, regulations and WHS standards and sharing and discussing more with you as we get closer to the event and you tell us more about what you want to build.

ART REGISTRATION & FUNDING

For those of you who plan to build art you have two options;

  1. SELF FUNDED: you’ll still need to REGISTER ONLINE before JULY 15th, click here to go to the form, or come visit us on site to check-in and get a sweet spot on the paddock. Want to see what we ask you? Check out the general reg form questions here.
  2. GRANT FUNDING: we have two tiers of grants SMALL (under $1,000) and LARGE (between $1,001 and $5,000). Depending on how the budgets work out over the next few weeks we may also have a new larger grant of $7,500

ART GRANT SELECTION COMMITTEE MEMBERS NEEDED

Lastly the ARTery could not function without amazing volunteers. Right now we are looking for another community member to join the ART GRANT SELECTION COMMITTEE (AGSC). This dedicated team are the folks who review all of the amazing applications and select the final recipients for the Art Grants and also short-list the top three Temple designs. Please CHECK OUT THE JOB DESCRIPTION and if you are keen to join our team please HEAD TO THIS FORM and tell us a little about yourself and we’ll be in contact. Applications close MAY 7th and informal interviews will happen the following week.

First, it needs people to make the art - and boy are we lucky to have so much AMAZING talent among us!

Second, art needs an audience (or does it? maybe that's another blog entirely...) and we are double lucky to have some fantastic media professionals expected to participate in Deep Space this year to capture the art and the experience (with CONSENT of course!) on camera and film for all eternity!!!

Third? Well if you like art and/or if you like media then YOU are the vital third ingredient to make 2016 the YEAR OF THE BEST ART AND MEDIA EXPERIENCE EVER KNOWN AT RED EARTH CITY!!!

ARTedia is that special place on the Paddock where Art, Artists and Media can collide, collaborate, and cook up kooky projects and ideas. Our onsite Art and Media space - ARTedia (geddit?) is looking for art lovers to be a part of the magic onsite, and media gurus who love talking shop to help crew the desk and work with our artist and media cohort.

Concierge positions for ARTedia have two VERY IMPORTANT jobs - from the ARTery side it involves meeting and greeting artists and making sure they're registered properly onsite. From a media perspective, the concierge will be the touchpoint for accredited media onsite to check in and register.

 
Shifty
 
Shifts are between 3 and 4 hours, running from Sunday before the event to Monday 3 Oct between 10am and 4pm each day - if you're onsite early please come hang in a comfortable tent for a half day and lend a hand. We need to fill between 30 and 40 shifts over the course of the week so we really need people who are keen to participate and commit to a couple of shifts of AWESOME at Artedia.

It’s a busy time for everyone as we hurtle towards Deep Space, but it’s especially busy for the amazing artists working on their projects for Burning Seed 2016 and the ARTery team that support them.

The ARTery received a lot of amazing applications for the large and small grants. The Art Grant Selection Committee had several long meetings (and a lot of prep to read all the submissions!) before deciding on this year’s recipients.

We are pleased to announce the following six projects who received large grants, click on their names for more details about their crew, project (unless they are keeping it hush-hush in order to surprise you!) and ways you can support them (there are lots of awesome fundraisers coming up!)

The Evolution of the Temple

Less than two weeks to go until the deadline for submissions for concept designs for the 2016 Burning Seed Temple and we are HELLA excited to see what you folks come up with!

Since the earliest days of Seed we’ve had some truly amazing Temple Burns - from Rob and Kursty’s green bamboo at the original Bellingen Seed (2010) and then at Matong with Myke McQuaid’s Temple of Time (2012) and Spirit Temple (2013), Elba Garcia-Clark’s Labyrinth (2014) and Brad Ogden’s Tower of Babel (2015).

Rusty, Seed’s beloved Temple and Effigy co-ordinator, has supported burning and construction of Seed's Temple and Effigy structures from the beginning and Rusty also plays a key role in the ARTery and in the new Fire Art Response Team (FART).

The first year in Bellingen we knew the green bamboo was going to be hard to burn, and the large embers tend to fly quite a distance," says Rusty. "That’s not such a big deal with a small group of people but we saw the same thing happen with last year’s Effigy - so bamboo is now banned for all the big burns at Seed,” he says.

Fresh challenges

Every year, each designer/builder/artist/architect has had new and fresh challenges to face - from finding the inspiration for their design, to budgeting, finding enough crew, accessing/learning the skills to create the structure, dealing with the elements during the build and ensuring a safe and successful - and awe inspiring! - Burn that Leaves-No-Trace.

Myke McQuaid says in the early days at Matong, with the budgets very tight, the size and scale of the Temple Burn was more modest than we can expect now.

I did the temple in 2012 and 2013," says Myke. "Both years the wood came from a local neighbor near Matong and was made from cyprus. The first year was roughly 76 sticks of wood of various sizes and a few sheets of plywood for gussets.

My strategy was always 4 builders in 4 days or it's probably too large a project. That was early days though and the budget was tiny so it fit. Nowadays you need lots more crew and lots more time.

Whatever the budget, make sure you’re clear upfront on the deal with the organisers - in terms of supply of power/fuel/lights/food/security/site prep/ what happens during the burn and after. Also expect 50% of your volunteers to go AWOL!

Budget growth

Myke was working with budgets of just under $950 in 2012 and around $1300 in 2012/13 while Brad Ogden’s Temple of Babel came in (on budget) at $15k last year. As the Temple has evolved so has the time/crew/material needed to build it.

Last year we had 6-8 crew at any given stage for prefabrication, 8-10 crew on-site (15 involved over the course of the project) and the whole thing took approximately 120 hours on build/prefab + 20 odd hours of designing,” says Brad.

In terms of wood and other materials we used 783 linear meters of 100x50, 40.8 linear meters of 150x50, a 6 metre 300x300 (that was shaped down into a 260mm hexagon)...   there was about 1500 batton screws (492 in the 6 supporting legs alone), a few fistfuls of nails and a few star pickets.

In terms of the build, pre-fabrication can take a lot of the stress of building on-site out of the equation but be careful when pre-fabbing with rough sawn timber... shrinkage is real.

Expect the unexpected

One rule of thumb that both Brad and Myke say all designers/builders need to consider…. expected the unexpected and be prepared to make compromises on site.

From the very earliest phase you need to think about how this thing will Burn,” says Brad. “For instance, in hindsight, we should have put a little more work into weakening the central post. It should have been obvious that once one of the sides was gone it would have fallen over. I expected it to stay upright a little longer than it did.

Also, no-one anticipated the amount of embers being thrown off by the thin ply skin. We normally work with thicker ply, but we had to compromise getting the laser cutting quote down to an acceptable level.

You have to think of the end at the beginning,” says Myke. “Like, how is this thing going to burn? Density is good - it allows for a good heat build up. In 2012 we had trouble getting it lit fully because it was so open but in 2013 - now that was the burn I was looking for!"

 

 

Safety Third

Safety is of course the most critical consideration for any Temple builder/burner.

In 2015 we introduced the Fire Art Response Team to tighten up our safety procedures and to facilitate smoother burning in and around the Paddock, particularly at the main Burns,” says Rusty.

I like the Burns when the crowd has to move back more because of the heat of the fire - they get to feel the power of the Burn and this only adds to the experience and to the understanding and respect for fire and what we do for a big Burn like the Temple.

Weakening - or making cuts in the timber to ensure a smooth Burn - is a very important consideration with the generally thick timber of the main support structure. You have a big safety circle with the Temple Burn for most of the day before you burn, so you can be bold with the weakening cuts and with your liquid and solid fuel loading.”

Learn from the Burn

It’s always great to learn something new,” says Myke.I’m a mechanical engineer, a veteran burner, handy with tools but in 2012 when we had 90km winds on-site and the Temple started listing a guy came over to help me and taught me a trick I hadn’t known before to stables it.”

Brad says design and build skills are important but not everything.

I’ve got basic carpentry skills, I’m self-taught on Sketch-Up, I have a rudimentary understanding of engineering/physics and some project management experience - but you don’t need to know everything - there are heaps of people involved who are ready to offer help and advice.

I will say this though - if my experience of the Temple build last year taught me anything, it's that if you turn around once, and do the Eagle rock... everything will be OK....”

Bring Your Mutant Vehicle Dreams to Life!

We’re getting more serious about transport around Red Earth City. As our community grows we need to make sure we have the necessary infrastructure to keep our City safe. But that doesn’t mean we can’t still have some radical and creative fun doing it….. hello art cars or ‘mutant vehicles’!

Last year (2015) saw the introduction of our first licensing and registration system for art cars on the Paddock, and the establishment of the Red Earth City Department of Mutant Vehicles (REDMV).

We’re expecting more art cars in 2016 and we’re looking for participants now to work with the REDMV team to help register vehicles in advance and to crew for the team. Red Earth City is a bicycle and pedestrian-oriented city and there is no driving allowed on site once you’re through the Gate other than with a registered art car or ‘mutant vehicle’.

What is a mutant vehicle?

A Mutant Vehicle is a unique, motorized creation that shows little or no resemblance to its original form, or to any standard street vehicle. Mutant Vehicles are radically, stunningly, (usually) permanently, and safely modified from their base vehicle. Sometimes the whole vehicle is made from scratch.” – Burning Man Department of Mutant Vehicles

At Burning Seed, all powered vehicles or human powered vehicles over 250kg for use on the Paddock need to be registered and licensed with REDMV. As well as complying with registration procedures and on-site driving rules, in order to qualify for a licence vehicles for use on the Paddock need to be ‘mutated’.

Creative collaboration is at the core of the Burning Seed experience and you could do worse than to work with a crew to bring your maddest Mad Max dreams to life with a mutant vehicle. The 2016 Burning Seed theme- Deep Space – offers some obvious inspiration but a project like this deserves your most radical expression!

Spectacular mutants in 2015

The first year of REDMV saw some spectacular vehicles make it to the Paddock, including the Wonky Queenslander, the Orphanage Art Car, the CocoPocoLocomotive and Mint Country Club’s Green Whale (this latter vehicle built on-site! – how cool was that!!?) Kudos to the crews responsible for those awesome MVs. Last year was also a success in terms of zero injuries and great communication and engagement between REDMV and mutant vehicle operators, and with Rangers and other relevant crew on-site. We want to see this same outcomes in 2016 with new and revised registration information and driving rules.

Get involved with REDMV!

If you love art, if you love vehicles or if you just love humans and want to make sure they stay safe on the Paddock, REDMV needs YOU! We’re looking for a REDMV second-in-command (2iC) to work with the Department to create documentation, evaluate applications, liaise with vehicle operators and ensure the safe operation of mutant vehicles on-site. We’re also looking for specialist REDMV crew to work with us on vehicle assessments including safety inspections, licensing and managing and enforcing safe Mutant Vehicle operation during the event.

The ARTery

All art projects that are set up on the Paddock need to register with Red Earth City’s ARTery Department.

The ARTery works with anyone bringing art to Burning Seed and supports art at the event through art grants and artist services.

ARTery registration forms for art on the Paddock in 2016 go live April 1 (no fooling!) and to help prospective artists navigate the process there’s heaps of info on the website about registration, policy, grants and more.

Getting an Art Grant

OK so you’ve had an AMAZING idea but you need additional funds to help you bring your vision to life? We got this – the ARTery Department offers two levels of grants for artists:

Small art grants of up to $1,000 and LARGE art grants $1,001-$5,000

There are a few things to bear in mind before you apply for a grant… like ARTery will not finance 100% of any proposal – rather encourages artists to gift, and find alternative ways to fundraise the amount they require.

Grants are also mainly for approved materials for construction of artwork – for instance wood, fixtures and fittings, fabric, paint etc. Grants are NOT provided for ‘labour’, Burning Seed tickets or personal travel expenses.

Applications for both grants also open April 1 2016. The deadline for large grants is May 15 and small grant applications close June 19 at 6pm.

2016 DEEP SPACE THEME DESIGN… REVEALED!!!

WOW! You folks are TALENTED!

We had a record number of submissions to our Design Lab for the 2016 DEEP SPACE theme design! Now, the amazing quality of all the entries made the job of selecting a design hella tough for our Team Leads, but they’ve only gone and picked one!! Check out the awesome design they selected below….

Deep SpaceSarah Barber – a graphic designer and hot glue-gun user extraordinaire, originally from New Zealand but now based in Sydney – submitted the selected design which was a hot favorite from the outset. We loved the cool, clean lines, pulling the sophistication of Art Deco into the galaxy – just beautiful! Ornamentation meets sacred geometry. In Sarah’s own words:

“The idea is that the moon is a mirror into our soul and thoughts. To look upon the moon and gaze up to the sky helps us to find meaning in our ponderings. The lines represent a blueprint of architecture (temple) and the coloured squares are windows looking past the lines into one’s thoughts and reflections. The image below the moon is from last years burn of people around the fire at temple burn, howling at the sky to let their inhibitions and fears rise up into the universe making them truly free. The watercolour top part of the image represents art and creativity.”

Sarah is a two-time participant at Burning Seed but is yet to attend KiwiBurn and Burning Man. You may even recognize Sarah from the Bloody Mary Sundays, serving Bloody Marys in the mornings around the various theme camps at Seed last year? Re-imagined in 2016 as Camp Lazertits, look out for Sarah and a few of the LazerTits camp riding across the Paddock in their new and awesome mobile BubbleStitch Bar!

“Each time I come back I always find such joy and amazement in the people that I meet in this community. Everyone gives in their own beautiful way and welcomes one another with open arms. It is a breath of fresh air seeing so much creativity, self expressionism and environmental awareness all in one glowing hub found in a tiny red forest in the middle of nowhere. It has changed my way of thinking, and the memories shared have stayed with me on tough days in the rat race. I am truly grateful to have found such a supportive, free-thinking community of people. Burn Bright you mad mad wonderful creatures.”


Voting process

We had 18 entries all up, a fantastic response to our call out for designs which was open from 22 January to 22 February. The Burning Seed Team Leads were presented with all the artwork, numbered so as to retain anonymity, and asked to rank their first, second and third choice. Each choice was given a value – 3 points for first, 2 for second and 1 for third – and once all the votes were cast the points were added. The selected design – Sarah’s design – was the one with most points.

What will the design be used for?

Sarah’s design will be used to create all the main Burning Seed 2016 event collateral, including:

  • all our social media shenanigans – for instance the banners and headers on our Official Facebook Page and the 2016 Event Page;
  • the event wristbands, on the stickers we give out at the Gate and on community crew schwag;
  • our official publications and guides including the First Timers Guide, The Survival Guide and the What Where When on-site event guide.

How was the DEEP SPACE theme chosen?

The Deep Space Theme was chosen from almost 100 community suggestions following last year’s event. Whether you’re planning your Theme Camp, your art, your costume or your gift to the community we’d encourage you draw inspiration from this year’s Deep Space Theme.

Inter-Burn travel fund for Melburn Theme Camps and artists

Melburners IncFantastic news for Melbourne-based Theme Camps and artists!

MelBurners Inc. is offering travel grants to support projects going to other Australian or New Zealand Burns in 2016.

They have a total of $500 to offer, so grants may either be split into smaller amounts or given as one $500 grant.

The travel grant is not for personal travel. It aims to support the transport of infrastructure (i.e freight) for Melburners to showcase their projects at Modifyre (QLD), Blazing Swan (WA) and Kiwiburn (NZ) in 2016.

Melburners Inc is the incorporated association that was set up in 2015 to run Melbourne Decompression events and manage distribution of any profits to benefit the local burner community,

We’re pleased to announce that we have funded a total of 24 projects this year in addition to the Effigy and the Temple! We had some amazing submissions this year and wish we could have supported more, but we’re working with limited funds.

What we clearly do have in abundance is a community with unlimited talent, energy and creativity. Right now there is a lot of building going on in backyards, supplies being ordered and other general arty awesomeness.

Bringing Art?

If you’re bringing art and planning to put up an installation at Burning Seed, we want to hear about it! It doesn’t matter if your piece is big or small — if it’s on the open paddock and not in a Theme Camp please make sure you register with the ARTery to get your spot on the map.

You only have a few days to do this — 31 August is the deadline. You can register here.  All art pieces must have a Leave No Trace plan, be well lit at night (even if it’s small please light it for safety so things don’t go bump) and if fire is involved you absolutely need approval from the Fire Art Response Team (fart@burningseed.com). Get your wriggle on for the Artery Parade on Friday

This year the ARTery will share a new space with the Media team: we’re calling Artedia (get it?). ARTery crew will be at Artedia from 11am to 3pm Wed to Sat during the event to answer any questions and to register your project. Drop by anytime (even after hours) to see our new large art map and read up on the installations around the Paddock.

On Friday night we’re hosting an Art Parade from 4-5pm. Join us for a walking art tour and learn about many of the pieces that have been created for your delight — costumes are highly encouraged!
