Burner Journeys… Finding Your Creative Power!!

by Acid Mama

The Burning Man (and Burning Seed!) community is a unique creative space when it comes to enabling people to push their comfort zones and try something new. For those of us who have had the opportunity to step up into our creative power and participate in a collaborative project for Burning Man or one of its regional events, we know how magical this experience can be.

Nothing fabricated about this - it's as real as it gets...

Being a Burner means doing cool stuff like DANGER!!

Furthermore, if you are a woman, as I am, and you’ve had this kind of opportunity, then you know just how empowering it can be to have your skills appreciated and encouraged, nourishing a part of you that thrives on creativity.

Getting Involved

In 2006 I experienced my first Burning Man and the incredible WOW-factor of Black Rock City. That year was eye-opening, challenging, and beautiful. When I left the Playa, I vowed to return with a major contribution. I’d enjoyed being a punter my first year, but felt that there was a deeper way I could participate.

In 2007, I bought an old school bus, gathered friends and talent, and rocked back up to Black Rock City with a hula-hoop camp. Our theme camp was bare bones, but still ticked the boxes. Yet still I wanted a deeper level of involvement.

During the next year, I relocated to study jewellery and metal fabrication at Uni – and this is where I found my niche. I got a job as the fine metals studio assistant, taught classes, ran open studio sessions, and assisted the students. On the side I was tinkering, playing and experimenting with welding, steel work and plasma cutting in the large scale metal fabrication studio. Then one day, somehow, through word of mouth, I got a call…

Finding Your Niche

“Prof”as he was called, had heard about me and my work through a mutual friend. He told me the story of his Burning Man theme camp and asked if I would join their crew – the Black Rock City Hardware Shoppe – a Burning Man fix-it camp that had been operating on the Playa since the mid ’90s. What had started off as a pop up tent with some rolling tool boxes, had, by the time I got involved, turned into a camp with massive acreage right on the Center Camp ring of Black Rock City.

We fixed, broke and re-made anything that came to our door; bringing welders, every hand and power tool imaginable, any nut and bolt we could gather. Incredible opportunities landed in our laps, as we helped large-scale sound camps, amazing art cars, even the Department of Public Works crew. During the next 4 years, my experience with Black Rock City Hardware Shoppe radically transformed my Burn, and my life.

Getting Creative - Flame Effects Archway At Centre Camp

If you ever wondered why we call ourselves Burners…THIS!

Bringing the Skills to Seed

Fast forward to Burning Seed 2015: I’d stumbled into being involved again, working as 2iC for Theme Camps, and being a part of the team creating the flame-effects archway at Centre Camp.
This latter project was an amazing opportunity for me to get back into welding and metal fabrication, work collaboratively with men and women, and dabble in a realm I thought I’d lost forever when I left America.

Through this project, a plethora of other opportunities have opened up, and I am deeply grateful for each of them. It’s now my turn to give back, and create opportunities for other women to explore metal fabrication and welding techniques.

Women: Rule the Weld!

Women (of Melbourne)! If you’ve ever wanted to upskill in welding and metal fabrication, now’s the time. Starting in May I’ll be offering a 6-session Women’s Welding Workshop every third Sunday, 10-4 pm. The course will be held at NORM Warehouse which has just moved to an awesome new space in North Coburg, right behind the Batman Train Station, next door to Bunnings.

The skills you will learn in the course could enable you to design, create and install incredible art on the Paddock, allow you to upskill in an area that nourishes and enriches a practice already in place, or simply encourages you to make wicked yard art. Whatever your intention is with this course, know that it is welcome and encouraged. The space I am cultivating will be exclusively run by, managed and filled with women: female instructor, assistant, studio manager, as well as female students.

Learn more about the course and enrol!! Alternatively, send an email for more information.

The Ten Principles… for Dummies

by Havoc

I lost my burginity in 2014, turning up to Burning Seed ImagiNation with so much crap it took two trips from Sydney to fit my kid in. I didn’t know anybody and my little girl had no idea that her mum was a dooflord in the olden days. I had never put up a pup-tent let alone the eight-man monster I now call the Taj Mahal, which was to be our home in unknown territory for the next week.

10 principlesI discovered Burning Seed while “researching” how to do Burning Man. I noticed the ‘regional’ tab and thought “maybe there’s a burn in Asia…wait, what? Burning Seed in Wagga Wagga?!“.

There’s nothing really that can prepare you for the experience of a Burn, you have to just brace yourself and get in it. But we’ve all been there. We’ve all been first timers. We’ve all been Burner Virgins or ‘Burgins’ and the majority of participants are prepared to help each of you through this experience.

So you may hear a lot of arguments about Burns not being festivals or doofs. They are “events”, “gatherings”, “celebrations” and the words used by some cause a great deal of consternation to others at times. The truth is they are all of those things depending on your own perception and more importantly what you make of it.

So what differentiates Burning Seed from a vapid party tribe at a commercial festival (and you are allowed to do that in your spare time too by the way)? The Burning Man project, of which Burning Seed is officially a part, is based on some key values known as “the Ten Principles of Burning Man” – Go ahead and take a look but don’t be gone too long now!

When you are new, the online chatter around a Burn can be bewildering. The information available on the website is brilliant but it is all created by volunteers, and it is always a work in progress. If you are at least mindful of the Ten Principles, everything goes chaotically smoothly or it also doesn’t. It will be more fun than you can conjure by yourself and believe it or not you might even grow as a person.

At AfrikaBurn and other regionals around the world an “11th Principle” is making the rounds – Each One, Teach One. In the spirit of EOTO, I present to you my “Ten Principles for Dummies”. Nobody does this the same way and few practice it perfectly. All of this is corruptible, corrupted and ultimately meaningless in the best possible way. The Principles are the recipe and we all add our own spice….

THE TEN PRINCIPLES: FOR DUMMIES

1. Wear What Makes You Happy
If you want to be a fish, a robot, a dressage champion or a human that is entirely OK with almost everyone. If and when someone calls you out for some random faux-pas only they understand, all you need to do is listen to their point of view and change your behaviour if they have moved you to do so or carry on as you see fit.  Similarly with your words, you can say whatever you want but that doesn’t mean the community will take your crap. The scum always rises to the top to be skimmed off…well no, that didn’t come out right at all…see how easy it is? NEXT!
2. Don’t Sell Shit To Other Burners.
Unless someone consents to being sold shit in places like Burner Classifieds or down a dark alley, leave your business cards at home. Yes money is a reality, and yes you need resources to burn bright but do not spruik, sell or buy at a Burn or on Burner forums or stolen email lists from fundraisers (this includes drugs, parties, sunglasses, shamanic actualization. The only exception is ice…made from water).
3. Paddle Your Own Canoe
Don’t be a Drainbow. The community functions best when nobody has to waste valuable love/art-making/dancing/learning/cuddling/slapshotting time getting other people’s shit together. Conditions can be really difficult at times so prepare well to joyfully participate in the miseries of Burning.
4. Muck In
If something needs doing, do it. If you can’t do it alone find other do-ers to help and amazing things happen. Do not place orders for your dreams to come true.
5. You Are a Citizen (be a good one)
Don’t believe the titles, nobody is your boss here. You and you alone are responsible for your actions and their impact on your community.
6. No One Gets Left Out
….(but that doesn’t mean everyone is going to like you)
7. Muck Out
Do not leave anything you brought with you behind, with the exception of the things you silently and respectfully release in the Temple.
8. The Power of Now
The days go by fast and they are never repeated. Don’t hesitate.
9. Get Amongst It
…but if someone else is part of your cunning plan, ask them first.
10. Plan to Give More Than You Decide to Take.

So now you know the Ten Principles (for Dummies). If you need to do this one more time…print it, record it or whack it on a T-shirt. Most of all take this lesson to heart. The Principles are the light that gets through the cracks, the cracked, and the crackpots alike and which makes even the dim ones shine.

With love from Havoc… “Magis Chaos. Narratio Glorificata.”

MOOP THAT, MELBOURNE!

MOOP SQUAD!

MOOP Squaddies take LNT to the STREETS!

Burning Seed’s very own MOOP SQUAD! hit the streets of Melbourne in December much to the surprise and delight of pre-Xmas shoppers. MOOP (or Matter Out of Place) is a serious business for burners - find out why

The MOOPSquaddies - Carly Bobarly, Di Paulger (of Mint fame) and PRINCESS TRASHBAG herself (the delectable Nikki Santos) - spent a few hours around Bourke St. Mall, Collins St. and Federation Square during Christmas week, MOOPing it up for the Melbourne masses!

“It was a really busy day,” said Carly, ”with heaps of families out shopping and looking at the Christmas decorations and displays. We each picked up about a medium bag of MOOP, mostly cigarette butts and stray candy wrappers/paper.

“To be honest, our main goal was not so much the huge amount of MOOP collected, but spreading the message to families and Christmas shoppers that 1) anyone can pick up rubbish and have a good time while doing it and 2) reusable bags are preferable to plastic, that is, try and cut down on your plastic while shopping.

“We walked around singing a few jingles about rubbish (courtesy of Will and Brendan at MOOP Patrol HQ) and approaching people carrying plastic bags, offering them a calico bag in exchange, and asking them(or their kids) to add the plastic bag to the train on Princess Trashbag's dress.

MOOP SQUAD!

Kids saying no to plastic? FANTASTIC!!

“We had a mostly positive response from the shoppers (only 2 people refused the calico bag) and the kids were fascinated by Nikki's crazy attire. I heard many parents explaining what we were doing to their kids. It felt good!!”

Check out all the photos from the day here at the MOOP SQUAD- XMAS Edition on Facebook.

Seed’s very own MOOP Daddy and Leave No Trace (LNT) Team Lead - Maddocks - says this is exactly the kind of off-Paddock activity Seed’s Leave No Trace team wants to encourage.

“This year at Burning Seed we had an unprecedented number of participants so the task of Leave No Trace was significantly bigger than ever before.

“What’s fantastic is to see the MOOP SQUAD and other Seed participants taking LNT to the default world and spreading the MOOP message - these Melbourne based burners are doing some fantastic work, including a couple of recent Merri Creek clean ups involving dozens of participants."

Take a MOOP journey through Red Earth City with the 2015 interactive web-based MOOP map. There’s heaps of information about different areas of our forest playground this year including Theme Camp LNT performance, plus photos, videos and more.

Rangers just got hotter

Rangers costuform

[bra_dropcaps style=’dropcap2′]T[/bra_dropcaps]hose super-heroes and super-heroines of Seed are back and sexier than ever. Rejoice in the orange glory of our Rangers new ‘Costuforms’. High visibility – check. High swag – check. UV50+ protective – check. Flame retardant – check. Yes! You read that right – EFFING FLAME RETARDANT!!

From the recruitment team at Outpost Oodnawoopwoop:

The Red Earth Rangers are regular Burners who take their Civic Responsibility seriously and Gift their time by walking the weird in Orange. Rangers are regular Participants – like YOU – just with a two-way radio and some training about who to ask for on the other end of it.

We roam in pairs and serve in a guardianship role as the eyes and ears of the community and help to keep participants safe. We are occasionally also called upon to act as an objective voice of reason and assist participants in resolving conflicts and situations that they can’t handle themselves.

Rangers also play a critical role in managing the perimeter for the Effigy and Temple burns, and are the first point-of-contact in the event of fire or medical situations. Presence of mind (ie sobriety) and an ability to keep a cool head in an intense situation are the only prerequisites.

It’s a cruisy, fun, engaging, and [mostly] laid-back gig that is a great way to meet people and see parts of Red Earth City that you otherwise might not. It’s also leads to getting more hugs of appreciation than you ever thought possible!

Even if you’re a first-time Burner, you can join the hi-vis ranks of the Rangers this year at Burning Seed! Ranger operations run for the duration of the event and operate 24-hours. Training sessions will be held pre-event in both Sydney and Melbourne in September, as well as on site at the event.

Wanna sign up as a Ranger? Check our recent Community Crewsday call out or sign up under the Participate tab on the Burning Seed website.
